Love your kidneys!

On the 15th of March, Fresenius Medical Care Singapore participated in a kidney disease awareness drive effort organized by the Department of Renal Medicine in Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

The mission of World Kidney Day (WKD) is to raise awareness of the importance of our kidneys to our overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide.

According to the Singapore National Health Survey (2010)1, high blood pressure affects 23.5% of Singaporean adults between the ages of 30 and 69 years. High blood pressure is one of the major risk factors for coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure and renal failure. Therefore, one of the key prevention activities on this day was to provide free blood pressure measurements for the public during this event.

On the day, seven volunteer staff members from Fresenius Medical Care Singapore were present at Tan Tock Seng Hospital Atrium to promote awareness for WKD.  On display were educational materials and an area for conducting blood pressure measurements. There was also a peritoneal dialysis demo corner which generated much interest from the public on this type of therapy.

All staff members were focused on their roles and were enthusiastically educating the public on maintaining healthy kidneys via informative materials such as postcards, presentations and quizzes.

Eye catching giveaways such as “I love my kidneys” badges and heart-shaped stress balls were given out as a reminder to maintain good overall kidney health.

Concluding the three hour event, a total of 199 blood pressure measurements were recorded and more than 250 people were educated on kidney disease.

Without a doubt the success for this event was due to the commitment and strong support from each of the Fresenius Medical Care Singapore staff who could not describe the satisfaction derived from this worthy activity - everyone walked away with smiling faces.

Please have a look at the photos that were captured from the day in the photo gallery.
