The Walk of Love

Supporting a movement towards better health

The ‘Walk of Love’ event – hosted by the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) aims to raise public awareness in providing holistic care for kidney patients and to motivate the community in embracing an active and healthy lifestyle through regular physical activity.1 Find out how 1200 Singaporeans got moving towards better health.

On  7th June 2014, over 1,400 members of the public, including 14 Fresenius Medical Care Singapore staff and their families, gathered to join in a 3 kilometre ‘Walk of Love’ event at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park to show their support in leading active and healthy lifestyles.

Hosted by the NKF, 45 of their employees and patients kicked off the evening by running a 10 kilometre relay marking the organisation’s 45 years of giving life and hope.

Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, together with NKF’s Chairman Mr Koh Poh Tiong signalled the start of the walk by lighting a torch. There were musical performances evolving around the theme of love along the 3 kilometre route to entertain participants. There were also health booths at the event site providing information on healthy living and recipes. Other activities included simulated rodeo bull riding, basketball, mini golf competitions and free massages. At the end of the walk, participants were given a goodie bag for their participation and everyone enjoyed a relaxing evening by watching a movie screening on the grounds.

The event encouraged the public to take healthy steps every day to prevent chronic diseases. In Singapore, 70 percent of the population is at risk of developing chronic kidney disease due to increasing diabetes and hypertension.2
